Timeline Relevant to the building of 518 First St:
- 1858 Commercial scalloping began.
- 1860 Menhaden was a well-established industry, with a large fleet of boats and factories for the extraction of fish oil.
- 1867 Greenport was becoming a modern village – population exceeded 2,000 and there were stores, several saloons, tradesmen shops, fine hotels and a bank.
- 1880 Greenport's population was 2,370
- 1881 A total of 5,350 ships were logged into Greenport harbor.
- 1884 The area's oyster industry began when New York State deeded the grounds beneath Peconic Bay to the Suffolk County Oyster Commission.
- 1887 Greenport Light and Power Company was incorporated.
- 1888 Village included 300 homes, 20 stores, seven churches, six hotels or inns, three shipyards, four wharves, one school, two banks, two newspapers, three fire companies, several fish factories, light and power company, water company, police and post office.
- 1900 Greenport’s population was 2,674; Southold Town was 8,989.
